Hormones are potent signals in the body. If we imagine that foods like proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates are the building blocks of the body, and that cells are the construction workers, then hormones are the foremen directing the construction.
For example, as people age and their hormones decline (loss of DHEA, testosterone, progesterone, vitamin D, estrogens), their bones become weaker, even if they continue to consume the same amount of calcium and other minerals. In fact, even if a hormone-deficient person consumes MORE calcium, his or her bones do not become stronger. Proper hormone levels are crucial to maintaining strong bones, among many other body functions. This is one of the reasons why optimizing hormone balance is important -- and the sooner, the better.
Likewise, many people don’t realize that osteoporosis is linked to vitamin D deficiency. Studies show that unless a vitamin D deficiency is addressed, even bisphosphonate drugs will have little benfit on bone density. Drugs can be useful tools, but for the best treatment, the underlying health concerns must be addressed.
Hormones have such an enormous impact on our health that the health care professionals at Advanced Family Wellness, PS believe monitoring them – and regulating them if necessary – is critical to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Here’s more information on the specific services we offer:
